A Little History

Blepharoplasty has been around for a long time. In fact, surgical treatment of the eyelids has been around since Ancient Rome. In the first century, there are records of surgery performed by the Roman, Aulus Cornelius Celus, who attempted to relax the upper eyelids.

Today, blepharoplasty is the technical term for surgery targeting defects of the eyelids, whether it be cosmetic or functional. Excesses of fat or muscle may also be targeted, as long as they are related to the appearance or functionality of the eyelids.

What Eyelid Surgery Can’t Do

Eyelid surgery is designed for sagging around the eyes and droopy eyelids. It can also create a “double eyelid” (a crease in the upper eyelid). However, blepharoplasty does not correct the following problems:

crow’s feet
dark rings around the eyes
sagging around the eyebrows.

These problems are better treated with other cosmetic procedures. Crow’s feet can be treated with Botox and sagging around the eyebrows can be treated with a forehead lift. Unfortunately, dark rings around the eyes from pigmentation is a difficult problem to correct. Some physicians suggest a chemical peel.

Whatever the problem, always seek the advice of a medical professional before deciding on the course of treatment.

A Better Reason

Okay, so you’re not just looking at it from a cosmetic point of view. Sure, you’ll look brighter, more alert and probably more youthful, but your choice to undergo blepharoplasty isn’t just to appease your vanity.

No. It’s to keep you from going practically blind!

Although eyelid surgery is designed mainly to improve the aesthetic appearance of the eyes, there is one reason that’s steeped in practicality. With age, the upper eyelids begin to droop and sag, covering up the eyeball and causing problems with vision. Did you know that this ptosis can even result in irritation and infection?

That’s why some people undergo eyelid surgery for reasons that are more than trivial. Depending on the amount of ptosis, the cosmetic surgical procedure removes excess skin and fat so that the upper eyelids no longer hang over the eyeball as much when fully open.

Following surgery, bruising and any puffiness that may occur will gradually subside, the duration depending on the individual. With the true results finally emerging over the course of a few weeks, vision impediments and other related problems generally disappear.

Pushing Up The Lids

Here’s a simple exercise to firm up those sagging upper eyelids:

Push up your upper eyelids with your index fingers, placed just below the eyebrows. As you push upwards (don’t push too hard! just gently but firmly), squeeze your eyes, so that there is tension in the skin of your upper eyelids. You should feel the skin stretch. This exercise helps to strengthen the muscles in the upper eyelids so that they don’t become weak.

The exercise should be repeated several times, in sets just like weightlifting. While it is definitely not as effective as eyelid surgery, it can help fight the signs of aging, or at least delay them!

20/20

Not being able to see clearly isn’t always about the capabilities of the retinas alone. Vision is also affected by the skin around the eye socket. If the skin is loose and sagging, it can impede the clear line of sight that the eye requires to receive an image.

Particularly with age, the skin of the upper and lower eyelids begins to sag. This may block parts of the retina, causing an individual to believe they may need glasses. But before you buy your first pair, check if it’s not actually your eyelids that are giving you poor eyesight. Visit your optometrist and gently press the skin of your upper eyelid upwards and look around while they’re examining you; if you’ve got 20/20 vision, glasses probably won’t be the best solution to your problem.

That’s why some people who undergo blepharoplasty, a cosmetic surgical procedure to correct the appearance of saggy eyelids, do so not just for aesthetic reasons. They view the procedure as a practical solution to their poor eyesight.

Blondie’s Facelift

Happy Birthday to Deborah Harry, the sultry lead singer of the pop group Blondie. She turns 62 this year on July 1, but looks years younger. Her secret? The power of cosmetic surgery, and more specifically, a facelift. And she’s not shy about having undergone surgery either. She openly states going under the knife to save/prolong her career. While nobody knows the exact date of her surgery, it is believed to have occurred many years ago.

Oriental Eyes

A common feature of millions of people of East Asian descent are upper eyelids with no visible crease. Some celebrate this as a unique characteristic of Oriental people, something that is a vital aspect of identity.

However, the “double eyelid” is a coveted physical trait of many East Asians, particularly women, who believe that it creates a more aesthetically pleasing appearance because it widens the eye and makes it appear brighter.

Because of this, thousands of Oriental women around the world have undergone eyelid surgery to create the crease in the upper eyelid. Most recently, it has been documented that even job seekers in Korea and Japan who wish to have “the edge” have gone under the knife for this very purpose.

But don’t think it’s just a phenomenon restricted to the East; Oriental women across North America are also getting it done.

The Beautiful Eyes of Celebrities

Many believe that the eyes are the most important part of the face. They express your emotions and provide insight into your personality and character. When conversing with someone face to face, it is also the feature the other person typically pays most attention to.

Unfortunately, it is around the eyes that signs of aging first appear, as early as 25. Muscles become lax and collagen breaks down, producing poor skin elasticity resulting in wrinkles and creases. Bags develop as fat gathers in pockets. All of this occurs in the upper and lower eyelids, and is difficult to conceal with make up or other such products.

Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery is designed to treat these signs of aging, and restore your youthful fresh look. During the procedure, also known as blepharoplasty, a desired amount of excess fat and skin can be removed. This tightens the area, producing an aesthetically pleasing contour. As only a specific amount is removed from the area(s), results tend to look natural rather than abnormal.

Blepharoplasty is also a common cosmetic surgical procedure for Oriental women, who tend to not have a crease in the upper eyelid. The procedure can create a fold in the upper eyelid to produce the appearance of wider eyes.

Celebrities and Eye Surgery
In fact, celebrities have also been known to undergo surgery to beautify their eyes. Hot celebrities who have undergone blepharoplasty include socialite, actress and singer Paris Hilton. She received a surgical lift of both eyelids about eight years ago, and may have further surgery to correct the eyelid of her left eye. Actor George Clooney has also admitted to having undergone blepharoplasty, reducing excessive wrinkles and puffiness.

Rumor has it that journalist and talk show host Barbara Walters may have also gone under the knife. Despite her age, she still appears youthful around her eyes.

Breast Implants: Their Size, Shape, and Texture

Today, there are many types of breast implants available on the market. Their differences can all be categorized according to the broad headings of shape, texture and size.

Shape of the Breast Implant

The shape of breast implants come in two general forms: round and contoured. While round is self explanatory, contoured breast implants are generally in the shape of a teardrop. This means that its shape is kind of like the letter “b”, in lower case, where the thickness gradually increases as it goes from top to bottom. Many women prefer this shape as it mimics the shape of an actual breast. On the other hand, other prefer the round implant, as it results in a fuller appearance.

Size of the Breast Implant

Size is one of the most important factors to consider for breast implants. Too small may make you wonder why you had undergone surgery in the first place, while too big could result in serious strain to your upper back and be a nuisance when performing daily activities. That’s why it’s important to examine your lifestyle, and determine what would be suitable according to those parameters.

Texture of the Breast Implant

Finally, we come to the texture of the shell of the breast implant. Whether saline or silicone filled, the shell is made out of a silicon elastomer that can be textured or smooth. Textured implants tend to be firmer and not shift around as much as smooth implants, since their textured surface can “cling” to their place. However, smooth implants do provide more of a natural feel.

In the end, it is up to you and your individual tastes to determine which type of breast implant is the best for you. Consultation with a cosmetic surgeon may also help you make the right decision.
